The Program

Ten hands-on days exploring the key issues impacting the cultural, social, political, and economic lives in Portland.

Leadership Portland features ten interactive days that explore education, economic development, government, justice, business, health, environment, racial equity, tourism and hospitality, and arts and culture.

Scholarships will support creating a diverse class with emerging leaders, new Mainers and new to Portland, as well as long-time residents. The interactive day-long presentations and discussion highlight key issues impacting the cultural, social, political and economic lives in Portland. Class participation, shared knowledge, expertise and personal perspectives are important components of the program.

Through experiential learning discussion and engagement, program graduates leave with an expanded awareness of effective leadership practices, a network of leaders who can support each other in building a stronger Portland, and a demonstration of the interconnectedness of topics covered.

There are more than 3,000 civic engagement and leadership programs across the country. Leadership Portland’s program design is modeled on Leadership Seacoast, which was established in 1988 and has more than 800 alumni.

The application fee is $50 (non-refundable) and tuition is $1,750. Scholarships are available on a limited basis.

Leadership Portland is the only Maine leadership program that:

Is about all things Portland — This is a hyper-local look at an evolving community of communities with a globally connected economy and culture.

Gets leaders outside of their typical routines and social circles in order to bring a diverse group of individuals together in an experiential, behind-the-scenes interactive and hands-on learning experience.

Stays fresh and current – the curriculum is tailored to our time and place, showcasing and unwrapping the complexities behind Portland’s most pressing community issues and areas of growth.

Looks at Portland from different perspectives and viewpoints:

  • Macro context — We’ll discuss the unexpected interconnections between issues and their long-term impacts.
  • Micro context — We’ll take a deep dive into each topic from different vantage points.

Leadership Portland provides a launchpad to become an informed leader in all senses of the word: at work, at home, and in the community. Participants will enter the program caring about the importance of local knowledge and action, and finish the program feeling informed, empowered, and inspired to lead.

Unlock your full potential as a Portland citizen and join this transformative program. Prepare to be captivated by its remarkable blend of information and engagement. Brace yourself for a journey that has the power to elevate not just your leadership skills, but also your character and personal growth. Don’t miss out on the opportunity to become an exceptional leader and a better version of yourself.”
